What do you use on your Pei? What works best for you and your dog? And why? I personal use and like a leather buckle collar. I use the buckle collar for our daily walks. Zephyr NEVER wears a collar of any type in the house! Only on walks. I do use a choke chain/training collar, but not on a regular basis. Obviously I use the choke chain in the show ring, beyond that, only when I feel Zephyr needs a tuning. When I say tuning, I do not mean slap the choke on and rip his head off! I mean, put the choke on and have him realize he needs to show a bit of respect while walking....Ive never been a fan of the harness, but I know MANY people use and love them. Devi

Well Chloe and I have tried lots. Not because nothing worked on her and she never listens (she is actually the opposite). But because I wanted to be able to say I tried this, this, and this. Harness: I used the harness a lot when Chloe was younger. When she got older however she is so chest heavy that any movement I do on the harness she cannot really feel. Gentle Leader: This goes around her head and muzzle, it is NOT a muzzle. She still has full use of her mouth etc. I found this worked great because it was her head I was controlling, not her heavy chest. However when she had her eye surgery I stopped using the gentle leader because it was close to her stitches. And I haven't used it since. Choke chain: I do have one of these for Chloe, I find however that as soon as I put it on she instantly knows what it is and walks ever so gently beside me ... so I've never really had to use it ... I just started using it when she had stitches in her eye lids and I couldn't use the gentle leader. Regular buckle collar: This goes on Chloe when she's in the car, gone to a friends house, or anytime I think it should be in her best interest to have her ID on her (if she got lost or something). When I let her out to pee, no collar. When she's in the house, no collar. She runs naked around the house (no collar etc) Now, Chloe mainly walks offleash. I live in a quiet subdivision so not many cars, and she is very obedient and walks beside me with no problems (even when other dogs walk by!) I am so proud of her.

I love Martingale collars. Mainly in nylon, but I bought some more fancy ones as well. Regular Buckle: I'm finding that they are not well adjust and with a fast shar-pei....Voilà, the dog is gone..and you're there..with the leash and collar!

Anik, I will fully agree with you regarding buckle collars. They can easliy slip off a Shar Pei head. I suppose because I am so very aware of the fact, I pay attention when we are on our walks. Many a time the collar has slipped over an ear and I carefully push it back. I don't think I'd walk more then one dog at a time, on a buckle collar, knowing how easily it can slip off if you are NOT right on top of what your charge is doing. As a rule, martingales might be the safest idea for a Pei. Regardless of that fact I use and will continue to use the buckle collar.....And hope I continue to pay attention! Devi

Our first Shar Pei was an absolute magician when it came to getting out of collars. She could get out of a buckle collar in 2 seconds. The harness probably took her 4 seconds. We never could find any type of gentle leader that work. The choke chain worked well but rubbed her fur. We finally settled on the martingale. We live in an area where rabbits, deer and other assorted wildlife are in abundance. Having our dog under absolute control at all times is mandatory. We will see what works best for the new puppy as she gets bigger.

I bought some new martingales for the puppies and they only wear them when going to the handling class. Fast learners...walking on a leash took one 1 class and at the second class, wow!! They were pretty good.
